I find it hard to believe that it is the 7th week of internship. It feels like time is passing by so quickly and without realising it, internship will come to an end soon.

The highlight of this internship so far, has to be the fact that the SP Campus Radio was broadcast live during SP Open House! Over 3 days, we could be heard at T19 building (home to cass, dmit and sb), Spinnovex and SP Innovillage. Our djs did a fantastic job on air and manage to keep the crowd entertained during the open house. Latest music were played and interesting trivia were shared.

The Radio team definitely had plenty of fun and stress planning the music and content to be broadcast for open house. On the day itself, alongside recent entertainment news, we have segments that will appeal to youths. This includes horoscope by Horoguru, Lulu and Horogypsy, tech talk (segment dedicated to dispensing technology related information by the Alpha Geek. Eg, top 3 coolest iPhone apps) and FYOG (for your own good – health related tips for youths). We also played games like Guess This Music and Spelling Bee. It was definitely fun to hear the interaction between the djs and participants of the games.

Interning at the SP Campus Radio is fun and interesting, especially with the company of 5 crazy people in the team. As a team, we brainstormed for content suitable for the listeners, prepared scripts for segments, produced and edit them too. It is definitely a long process to get one segment done, but you will definitely learn something new while on the task. Post production work (editing) is one of the challenging task that I enjoy doing. It is amazing how different recordings can turn into a radio segment; as if like a movie only it is in the audio format.

Serious stuff aside, as a team, we do have fun and enjoy the company. We joke around and play pranks on each other. Sometimes when we are tired and stressed out, the whole team will burst into a song. You belong with me by Taylor Swift is a great hit among the 6 of us. I know the song by heart now! ;)

7 weeks into the internship, I definitely learn more about the technical/post production side of radio. Who knew so much is going on behind the scenes of a radio station? :)

It’s been quite some time since the last that I posted here!

Well, it has been 3 months and 3 weeks into internship already, 7 more weeks to go!
And oktoLIVE! has already shown 10 episodes, which means there’s 7 more episodes to go only!

It all seemed that we have came a long way… but, yes we did come a long way. =x But time flies!
Still recalling the first day of internship, we were all like SOTONGs, not knowing what do we do, where should we start… till the day before the very first episode of oktoLIVE! is going to air when we were all busy like BEES… till now that we have already gotten used to the routine, preparing and seeing how each Friday just comes and goes…

The most difficult times were the times when we had to juggle between school work and internship, it was also the last 6 weeks which we would be spending in our Poly life. No matter how, we still tide through it! And on the very last day, we shed ‘buckets’ of tears… tears of the thought that it’s the last time we are spending our school days together, the thought that we would miss each other. :’(

I still miss school. The days as a SP DMC student, but I will never forget those times.

I must also say, I have enjoyed the times during this internship no matter how much hard work we have to go through, how many nights we have to stay up late, how many heavy stuffs we have to carry. It’s still a wonderful and valuable experience, because working with the people in MediaCorp has been great and fun! They are very nice to us… learning many things from them. We also had meals together, received gifts from them from their overseas trip and also for Christmas, HAHA! And of course, I appreciate the times working with the oktoLIVE! student producers – a nice title given to us (hehe) !

I’m glad the days as a SP DMC student had been so enriching and enjoyable, which was not something I had expected before I join because I always thought I wouldn’t have enjoyed the times in Secondary School as much as in Poly.

No matter how tests, exams and projects had been stressing us out, the 3 years here still had been fun, more fun than stress, because of the people here – classmates and lecturers. :)
Thank you all for the times…

Check out this video!

A couple of  Singapore Polytechnic 3rd year Diploma in Media and Communication (DMC) students had a part to direct this DMC promotional video! Not forgetting the students who helped backstage, Fazli for the amazing editing of the video, Mikh and Eve (the actors!) and lecturers, Ms Kwa, Samuel Nai and Ms Nga. I believe we were all glad to be part of it.

Heres the video:

Found this on Sp’s website and it reminds me of the days where we had to plan events. :)

Did you know that India is the  largest democracy in the world? Portuguese is the official language of Brazil? The second  largest population of Greeks in the world lives in Melbourne,  second to Athens?   And that because they look almost similar, the most commonly confused flags are  the New Zealand  and the Australian flags?

Those are the kind of questions that were  asked during the Oneworlday Gameshow which was held on 5th November 09, in  celebration of International Day. The Oneworlday celebration was jointly  organised by 3 schools in SP: School  of Communication, Arts and Social  Sciences (CASS), School of Business (SB) and School of Digital Media  and Infocomm Technology (DMIT).

The best thing about it? I get to organise  it with my friends! And we ended up overflowing with the myriad knowledge of our  world.

The gameshow was under the charge of CASS. As  a Media and Comm student, and also a SPOT – short for Singapore Polytechnic  Outstanding Talent – I had the privilege of planning, researching and designing  the Gameshow with four other SPOT students.

It was a gameshow with a twist – a gameshow  that tests your current affairs knowledge, or more like a Gameshow for  Eggheads, you know, the ones who know EVERYTHING. And the team that knows  everything does get to go away with cash prize money.

he task to organise it was given to five  SPOT students, but I was the only first-year student in the game show team and  the only one from CASS. The team was led by Steven Peeris, a second year Business  IT and SPOT student. It took a lot from us to think of the questions that cover  the whole world, but I must say it was well worth the effort. With hard work,  commitment and lots of reading up on world trivia, we gathered various  questions of ranging difficulties to test the student teams of three members  each.

What’s amazing is the top group knew the  answers to most of the questions! And they went home with over $135 cash.

Our students are indeed Mr and Miss know-it-alls!

Juniors took a step further with their school project and presented their findings to the world! Literally.

__________________________________________________(source)__

Imagine you are doing a normal school project and the only thing you are worried about is your grades. The next thing you know, that very school project you toiled many sleepless nights over is showcased to the world!

This isn’t just some media student’s fantasy. A group of SP’s Media and Communication students did exactly just that, with their research project on Singapore Youth and Social Media.

As part of their Mass Media Research module every year, a topic is chosen for students to work on. The top student team for the module is given the opportunity to present their research findings to the media and handle media interviews. This out-of-classroom experience is integral to the Media and Communication course.

On 8 Dec, the team of nine second-year  students presented with their findings to the media through a media conference.  That same night, the students appeared in TV and radio news bulletins!

The local press featured their work the  very next day.

Sean Firoz Chan, 19, one of the presenters  said: “I’m very proud that our project was showcased to the media, considering  the amount of effort we put into the project. It was also a rare opportunity  for us, as students, to conduct and manage an actual media conference.’

Sean’s just being modest. It wasn’t just  the local media. US, Malaysian and Taiwanese media also picked up the story!

Another team member, Norsharizan Shadan,  18, said: “Everyone was so pumped up when we found out USATODAY.com reported  our findings. It is awesome having our project showcased to an international  audience.”

It’s no surprise that their social media  research was reported widely, since social media services, such as Facebook,  Twitter, YouTube and countless other websites, have had a profound effect on  millions of people around the world.

For the record, their survey which involved  800 youths in Singapore  showed a majority of youths reveal their various personal details online. More  worryingly, 9% of them revealed their contact details while 5% of them revealed  their home address on social networking sites. The team felt these numbers are  worrying, considering the rise in online sexual harassment.

Overall, the team felt that their research  and presentation skills honed during their media and communication course in SP  have given them this rare opportunity to showcase their project. Who knows,  maybe these very students are going to be the future trend-setters in the media  world!

4 of our very own DMC peers just won themselves an all paid trip to Pulau Pangkil! I’m so happy for them!
Thanks to their creative concept, lively and youthful video and the lasting friendship.

It’s even featured in SP’s website! Here is the article. (source)

We love DOVE!

Guess who won an all-expenses paid private island getaway and get to bring nine of their friends along?

Well, four SP Media and Communication students did after winning the $10,000 first prize in the Dove Go Fresh Splash Challenge, a viral video competition.

The team, made up of Eve Voigtlander and Serene Tan, both 19, Netty Aprillia, 21, and Nurul Jannah, 20, apparently put to good use the skills they learnt in their Media and Comm course. Although Netty and Nurul Jannah graduated a year ago, the four girls are good friends and hang out regularly.

Said Eve: “It was one of those random decisions. We had lots of practice in filming and editing techniques in the Media and Comm course. Netty sent me a Facebook message about the competition. We had an online discussion before going: Why not? So we did it.”

The task involved creating a viral video showcasing the Dove Go Fresh body wash. Participants are given artistic freedom to decide on the theme and storyline.

The four ladies decided to promote the new Dove body wash in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Their video “That Thing Dove Does” runs for 1:22 minutes to the tune of “That Thing You Do”, rewritten by the students to promote Dove Fresh body wash.

“We couldn’t afford models so we filmed ourselves using the body wash, singing and enjoying the freshness of the product.

“At first, we filmed the wrong Dove bottle and only realised it halfway through the filming session. When we found out, we quickly headed off to Mustafa Centre to buy the right bottle,” recalled Eve.

Netty said: “We filmed in one day and one night, but the editing took much longer. It helped that the team has good chemistry. So it became a fun, bonding experience.”

The video was then posted to Dove Facebook fan page, which invited Facebook users and Dove fans to vote for the best video.

“We also posted the video on our respective Facebook pages and did our own viral marketing. We wouldn’t have won if not for the votes cast by the public and our friends, so we wish to thank everyone for voting!”

For the record, the team is heading to Pulau Pangkil, a private island resort in Indonesia for 3 days in January 2010. And they’ll be taking six of their friends along for some sun, sea and sand.

All eyes are on the action in front of the cameras. But backstage, phones are ringing and the control room is abuzz with activity. It is what you can’t see that makes the TV show oktoLIVE! possible. .

The 10 students behind the Friday evening show are our very own SP Media and Comm students! It’s as real as can be. ‘Live’ action every Friday evening, beamed across the nation on Mediacorp’s okto channel.

This is the second year that a group of 10 students from SP’s Diploma in Media and Communication are producing oktoLive!, a half-hour live TV programme on Mediacorp’s okto Channel. Taking over the helm from their seniors who produced Season 1 of oktoLIVE!, these 10 students are entrusted with producing Season 2’s show to a different audience.

The previous batch of Media and Comm students laid the groundwork for the programme and they captured a large following. Have the juniors stepped up their game?

Student-producer Jovis Ang, 19 (standing, second from left), said: “I feel honoured to do be working on such a major project. Yes, at times it has been stressful but once you get used to it, it becomes a routine. It is important to get into a workable routine as we will be producing 17 episodes.”

“Of course it helps that we are given a lot of creative freedom to conceptualise the theme and issues for the show. It is great to see your effort on television especially when I watch the encore telecast on Sundays.”

Another member, Aaron Yap, 20 (seated, front), said: “Initially, it was quite tedious. However, I feel thankful that our mentors take the time to help us and teach us the ropes of TV production.” The 20-year-old, who took the Radio and TV Production free elective module, add: “I am interested in sound production and I was given hands-on experience with the sound equipment.”

The team had to overcome challenges such as coming up with content for the show. Applying what they have learned in the Media and Comm course, they first research on possible topics, then generate discussion on these topics to make them appealing to the target audience. For example, for episode one, in their ok-to-TALK segment, they featured 6-12 year-olds giving their take on the topic: “How old should you be before you have a boyfriend/girlfriend?” That episode received the highest viewership ratings so far this year and last year.

Garnering good ratings and putting up a great show every week involve working late hours and dealing with many challenges and obstacles. But largely, producing oktoLIVE! has been a great out-of-classroom experience for this team, and most definitely an unforgettable one!

And this too!  (Click here for original source)

What happens when you put a group of Media and Comm students together in the same room?  A whole lot of noise and exciting ideas for the latest kids’ show on Mediacorp’s okto channel!

Since 30 October 2009, 10 students from the Diploma in Media and Communication embarked on a magical internship journey in TV to conceptualise, execute and co-produce a live television show specially for kids.

oktoLIVE! is a 30-mins infotainment series that is both fun and educational! The programme allows kids to speak their minds about current issues, play games via 3G phone calls, learn cool stuff from experts and many more!

For the 10 students who have been appointed student producers, it has been an eye-opening experience.  “I’ve learnt tons of new things and have had the opportunities to do things I would never have done on my own! I’m extremely honoured to have been picked to be in oktoLIVE! season 2 team!” said Shireen Bte Ramli, one of the student producers in charge of ok-to Love/Have Fun segments on the show.  Her co-producer, Seah Li Yan had a different take.   “It is enjoyable because all of us work as a team, and we see stars almost every other day!’

If you are young-at-heart, or have any younger siblings, tune in to oktoLIVE! every Friday, from 30th October, 6.30 to 7pm, ONLY on okto channel!

Do check out www.oktolive.sg for more exciting information about the show and find out what our Media and Comm students are up to!

Here are some of the other photos taken!

*Pressurised by viewership!* Hope it’ll be good news on Monday!

15 more episodes to go!
If you’ve missed the 2nd episode of oktoLIVE!, don’t worry, you can still catch the encore on Sundays @ 1pm!

Rehearsals didn’t ran very smoothly yesterday and so we were kinda worried for the actual TX. But luckily all went well! Viewers at home will never get to see the tense moments happening backstage. Haha!

After finishing our 2nd episode yesterday, we shifted all our stuff from our office room situated at a cosy corner
old office

to another cosy, secluded corner.
New office

We can laugh as loud as we can now! Not that the previous one cannot, but even with closed doors, we can still visibly be heard outside, and there’s many other people’s desk just outside of our room. HAHA
Our new office room is still on the same level, with printers just outside and no others.

Man. It was like spring cleaning! Shifting the computers alone is enough to make everyone SEH~ on our seats when we were done. I also took the chance to dump all the waste that has been accumulating since we started work in Sep, and YAY my desk is so neat now. =x
I’ve got my own small cabinet underneath my table now too, and the new room is bigger with stronger aircon! And YES! We get to choose our own seats, so I’ve picked one that my computer screen won’t be facing whoever is coming in our room. *Privacy!*

Oh, and our extensions changed too… so you can’t contact us via the office no. on the namecard. Have to change the no.s on the card manually…

But I will still miss our old okto office!

SIDETRACK:
OH! And only after their first ep of shoot for the New City Beat, they are considering making it into a long-running one instead of a one-off season! YAY! Read here.
